The Federal Government says it has reduced the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway size from 10 lanes to six as a cost-saving measure for the legacy project.
The Government also said it has rerouted the project’s path to avoid any possible damage to subsea cables belonging to telecommunication companies.
This was disclosed by Engr. David Umahi, Minister of Works, at a meeting with contractors on Tuesday in Abuja, who said the government had disbursed a total sum of N10bn as compensation to property owners affected by the demolition necessary for the construction of the 700km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.
Umahi also said the first phase of ongoing work on the Coastal Highway will be ready for commissioning by May 2025.
He said over 80 per cent of 330 emergency projects worth N260bn have been completed.

“The ministry is doing everything possible to see how we can do away with variation of price. In the states, there is nothing like variation of price, but what is fashionable in the Ministry of Works is variation of price.
“Let me announce that the concrete we gave, and the asphalt we gave are based on a price of N1,700 per $1 US dollar; it doesn’t attract any variation,” Umahi said.
