How Police Corporal promoted himself to SP, failed to report to station for 9 years in Cross River

The Cross River State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has arrested and detained a Corporal, Buba Adamu, for promoting himself to the rank of Superintendent of Police (SP) and failing to report to new station in Kaduna State Command since 2015.

The detained corporal who was alleged to have been carrying out illegal activities using his uniform in Calabar, the state capital, was also charged with alleged impersonation.

Corporal Adamu, who had since promoted himself to the SP rank, was said to have been transferred from the Cross River State Police Command to the Kaduna State Police Command in 2015.

Adamu is said to have been operating as a “Mobile Police Officer” without any supervision nor reporting to a specific Police Command since 2015.

During this time, he has been receiving his salary despite not reporting to his new station.

Adamu’s cover was blown open when some concerned members of the Nassarawa Community, a Hausa/Fulani settlement in Calabar Municipality who had suffered from his illegal activities, raised an alarm.

The people raised the alarm when they learnt that the Police Command was under pressure to release Adamu.

They feared that releasing Adamu would be detrimental to their safety and well-being as he has allegedly been intimidating a lot of people in the area.

They claimed many people have fallen victim to his alleged nefarious activities, as he has been assuming the role of a Divisional Police Officer without any oversight.

Confirming Adamu’s arrest and detention, SP Irene Ugbo, Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer, said Corporal Adamu will be in detention while investigation on the matter continues.

She said: “It is true that the said officer was transferred from Cross River to Kaduna State since 2015 and no one knew he didn’t report at his new station ever since.

“There are allegations that he has been carrying out criminal activities around Bacoco, Nassarawa area of Calabar, all this will be investigated with a view to prosecuting him.

“You are aware that the Police is trying to rebuild its image and no one man will be allowed to spoil that.

“I can assure you that the right thing will be done on this matter upon completion of investigation, if he is found wanting the law will take its cause.”
