Benin Government Launches Pilot Program for Autistic Children

The Beninese government has launched the pilot phase of its Integrated Care Project for Autistic Children in Cotonou and Abomey-Calavi.

The Ministry of Social Affairs and Microfinance hosted a mid-term review workshop in Cotonou, bringing together parents, disability associations, NGOs, and health and education professionals. The event evaluated progress since the project’s launch and outlined future directions.

Parents expressed deep gratitude for the government’s full funding of the initiative.

Many shared emotional testimonies of their children’s development. “My son can now communicate and interact with classmates,” said one mother. A specialist teacher added, “We’re seeing real improvements thanks to tailored teaching approaches.”

The workshop featured a key presentation on “Autism and Learning” by speech therapist Dima Jeradi, emphasizing inclusive teaching practices.

Minister of Social Affairs and Microfinance praised the strides made so far—including better access to medical care, educational support, and parent-teacher forums. The project, built on five strategic pillars, aims to integrate autistic children into society by connecting families, educators, and health workers.
