Aba, Nigeria – Brown Ideye’s decisive second-half strike helped Enyimba FC secure a 2-1 victory against Nasarawa United in Aba, ending their eight-game winless streak in the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL). The much-needed win not only revitalised the People’s Elephant but also showcased Ideye’s growing influence in the team.
The nine-time NPFL champions, led by coach Stanley Eguma, dominated the first half, creating multiple chances but struggling to convert. Despite Enyimba’s early pressure, Nasarawa United almost took the lead in the 35th minute when a defensive error by Somiari Alalibo gifted Anas Yusuf a golden opportunity. However, Yusuf’s tame header failed to find the target, keeping the match goalless.
Enyimba eventually broke the deadlock just before halftime. Ifeanyi Ihemekewle’s perfectly weighted through ball found Joseph Atule, who maintained his composure to slot the ball past the goalkeeper, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
Nasarawa United came out strong in the second half and found an equaliser in the 58th minute. Anas Yusuf, the league’s top scorer, capitalised on a precise pass from Abubakar Garba to tap into an empty net, recording his 11th goal of the season and reinforcing his dominance in the NPFL scoring charts.
In a tactical move, Brown Ideye was introduced in the 60th minute, replacing Ekene Awazie. Just three minutes later, the former Super Eagles striker made his presence felt, restoring Enyimba’s lead. A brilliant solo run by Joseph Atule sliced through Nasarawa’s defence, setting up Ideye, who calmly dispatched the ball into the net. The goal marked Ideye’s second in as many games, following his debut strike last weekend in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Despite a spirited performance by Nasarawa United, Enyimba held firm to secure all three points. The result highlighted the importance of Ideye’s experience, with the veteran striker now tallying two goals in just 78 minutes of action since joining the team.
For Nasarawa United, Anas Yusuf’s impressive campaign continued as he solidified his position as the league’s leading scorer, but his efforts were not enough to prevent defeat.
The victory comes at a critical time for Enyimba, who are gearing up for a decisive CAF Confederation Cup clash against Al Masry of Egypt in Uyo on Sunday. With renewed momentum, the People’s Elephant will aim to carry their domestic resurgence into their continental campaign.
Enyimba fans will hope this result signals the beginning of a turnaround for the Aba-based side as they strive for success both in the NPFL and on the African stage.
