The chairman of Calabar South Local Government Area in Cross River State, Hon. Esther Bassey has nonchalantly blamed the residents of the Calabar Municipality for littering the council.
Recall that Calabar metropolis, one of the cleanest cities in Nigeria has come under scrutiny over its recent unkempt nature. Both Calabar Municipality and Calabar South are not to be exempted from the recent woes as dirt takes over the streets.

But, a recent and shocking statement by Hon. Bassey has left everyone in awe, knowing fully well that nowhere in Calabar is clean in the past couple of months.
According to Efio-Ita Nyok, a blogger who in recent times has been reporting the activities of the local government, “this accusation follows 3 months of similarly accusing Nigerians of South Eastern extraction (Igbo) residing in Calabar South and doing business at Watt Market Shopping Center Complex of refusing to pay N950 levies which have never been unaccounted for”.
Nyok added that recently, “the Cross River capital metropolis has been defaced by unbelievable heaps of overflowing dumpsters/dump-sites to the chagrin of the residents with both the state government and council authorities of Calabar South and Municipality not being sensitive to the environmental and medical implications”.
