Calabar South Local Government Area, (LGA) has witnessed very low voter turnout in the ongoing governorship and state houses of assembly election in the state.
Although, residents of the LGA complied with the movement restriction order of the Federal Government, the voters at the various polling units were very few.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that electoral materials arrived early in Calabar Municipality and voting commenced at 8.30 am in most of the wards.
NAN also reports in spite the large population, only few people came out to vote.
Polling centres visited in ward 12 in the area showed near empty units as officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were waiting for voters.
In polling unit 044, in Ekpo Abasi, one of the electorate, Mr Charles Obo said that as at 8:30am, accreditation and voting had commence but only very few people were available to vote.
Obo stressed that the low turnout of voters may have been caused by what he termed the disenfranchisement of voters in the last presidential election.
Mrs Esther said that many eligible voters did not come out because they felt their votes may not count because of what happened during the Feb. 25 elections.
According to Mr Reuben Ephraim “I think it is early, people will still come out and cast their votes. (NAN)
