The pioneer Chairman of the Congress of University Academic, CONUA, Dr. Niyi Sunmonu has said that the Union has never been on strike as the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU’s strike enters its 9th month.
Recall that the Federal Government through the Minister of Labour, Hon. Chris Ngige recently gave the body a licence for operation, and to that effect, the National Chairman, Sunmonu has come out to state the side of the union.
While filtering questions on Friday, October 7, 2022, Sunmonu said ASUU is an independent union and does not have dominion over other unions.
His words: “To answer everyone asking when we will call off the ongoing strike.
“I wish to make it clear that CONUA as an organisation has not been on strike; there has never been a time when we declared strike.
“ASUU is an independent union and what it does has no bearing over other unions just like two different human beings. We have not been on strike and we are not on strike.
“We stopped teaching when students were asked to vacate campuses. We hope universities will open again and we can go back to teaching.
“The formation of CONUA is not on the basis of strike action declared by our sister union (ASUU). We have not been on strike, we are ready to work if students are back on campuses”.
