Abuja, Nigeria – A Federal High Court sitting in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has restrained the Police from rearresting cryptocurrency entrepreneur, Obol Jesam Michael, CEO of Afriq Arbitrage System (AAS).
Converseer reports Michael was arrested over issues surrounding the cryptocurrency and has since been under police detention. But, he filed an action for enforcement of his fundamental rights.
In Suit No. FCT/HC/CV/14/2024 and Motion No. FCT/HC/8W/M/139/2025, Honourable Justice M.A. Madugu of the High Court ordered his release on 18th February 2025.
The judge ordered the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 8th and 9th respondents from rearresting and detaining Obol Michael without recourse to the Court.
The order to release him was accordingly served on the Inspector General of Police and all Police officers involved in the matter, but they refused to obey it.
Sources revealed that the police ditched the court order and rather took Michael to the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and sought to hand him over.
Meanwhile, a source in the Force Intelligence Department who pleaded not to be named, denied that they have refused to execute the court order.
The court will sit to listen to the matter on Monday 24 February 2025.
