Cross River Workers to Embark on 2-Day Strike Over Minimum Wage

Calabar, Cross River State – The Organised Labour in the State has directed all workers to commence a 2-day strike over the non-implementation of the new minimum wage.

Converseer reports that the 2-day warning strike will begin on November 24 to November 26, according to Bulletin 1, released by the Organised Labour on Wednesday, November 20, 2024.

Parts of the bulletin read thus:

“Whereas Organised Labour in the State, having listened to briefings from her representatives in the State Minimum Wage Implementation Committee.

“Whereas the General Congress, having extensively deliberated on the issue, hereby resolved as follows:

1. That All Workers in Cross River State commence a 2-day Warning Strike Action, beginning from midnight of Sunday the 24th of November, to Tuesday 26th of November, 2024.

2. All affiliates of both NLC and TUC are to mobilise their members for full compliance.”

Recall that in July this year, President Bola Tinubu signed the new N70,000 minimum wage into law after much deliberations with the Organised Labour.

On like other states, the implementation in Cross River State lingered until last week, when Governor Bassey Otu inaugurated a 16-man Minimum Wage Implementation Committee, expected to submit a report for the full implementation.

Converseer further reports that the State Minimum Wage Implementation Committee includes the State Chairmen of NLC and TUC, the State President of NULGE, the Chairman of the Joint Service Negotiating Council, the Chairman of the Medical and Health Workers Union, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Staff Union, Secretary of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, among others.
