Desperate Politicians Sponsoring Illegal Mining in Cross River – Communities Cry Out

YAKURR – Agoi Ekpo and Agoi Ibami communities in Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State have been thrown into turmoil as alleged politically-backed illegal miners invade legally acquired mining sites, causing tension and endangering lives.

Investigations reveal that influential figures, both within and outside the communities, are reportedly sponsoring these activities in clear violation of the Nigerian Mining Act 2007, raising concerns about law enforcement and government intervention.

Illegal Miners Take Over Licensed Sites

Reports indicate that a mining site legally operated by Arittgray Nigeria Limited and Hairlequin Creation Ltd has been unlawfully occupied by thousands of illegal miners, mostly from northern Nigeria.

According to residents, these individuals initially arrived in October 2024, attempting to commence mining operations. When confronted by the legitimate operators and community members, they allegedly withdrew, only to return in larger numbers on 3rd January 2025, this time armed with weapons.

The illegal miners reportedly forcefully evicted the rightful operators, leaving workers fearing for their lives. Witnesses claim the invaders have openly threatened to attack anyone who resists their activities.

Allegations of Political Sponsorship

Community members strongly believe that the illegal miners are enjoying backing from powerful politicians who provide them with protection and financial support.

A resident, Justine Akpama, questioned how such a large number of illegal miners could enter the state through the border states of Benue and Ebonyi without security agencies intercepting them.

“This invasion could not have happened without the backing of the high and mighty. We call on relevant government agencies to intervene to protect our lives and property and restore order. If left unchecked, this could destabilise our community and set a dangerous precedent for land and resource disputes across Cross River State,” he warned.

Mining Company Calls for Security Support

Speaking to journalists, Engineer Israel Uboh, the Managing Director of Arittgray Nigeria Limited and Hairlequin Creation Ltd, confirmed that their mining site had been invaded multiple times.

He revealed that about 46 individuals had been arrested and charged to court, but stressed that without strong security intervention, illegal miners would continue to pose a serious threat.

“We are doing our best to expel these invaders, but we need the full support of security agencies to prevent further incursions. Their activities are not only illegal but are also depriving both the state and federal governments of revenue that should be accruing from legitimate mining operations,” Uboh stated.

He reaffirmed the commitment of his company to working with local communities for the sustainable development of Agoi Ekpo and Agoi Ibami, adding that their projects would benefit both the host communities and the state at large.

Stakeholders Await Government Action

Some community stakeholders who spoke to THE BEAGLES NEWS expressed concern over the growing insecurity and lawlessness in the region. They urged both the federal and Cross River State governments to take decisive action against those sponsoring illegal mining.

One of the community elders warned: “Our people are already suffering from the activities of these illegal miners. If urgent steps are not taken, the situation could escalate into violence. We demand justice before it spirals out of control.”

Legal and Security Implications

Under the Nigerian Mining Act 2007, illegal mining is a criminal offence that attracts penalties, including seizure of equipment, fines, and imprisonment. However, enforcement remains weak, especially when powerful figures are allegedly involved.

Security analysts warn that if illegal mining is not addressed, it could lead to a broader crisis, including:

  • Escalation of violence and communal clashes.
  • Increased environmental degradation due to unregulated mining.
  • Loss of government revenue from legitimate mining operations.
  • Rise in criminal activities and insecurity.

Call for Urgent Government Intervention

The affected communities have called on the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, Cross River State Government, and security agencies to immediately address the crisis by:

  1. Deploying security forces to clear illegal miners from the area.
  2. Investigating and prosecuting those involved in sponsoring illegal mining.
  3. Strengthening border security to prevent further illegal incursions.
  4. Ensuring that licensed operators can safely conduct their businesses without fear of violence.

The situation in Agoi Ekpo and Agoi Ibami remains tense, with residents hoping that authorities will step in before the crisis worsens. As illegal mining continues unchecked, the future of the communities and the state’s mining industry remains uncertain.
