Washington, D.C. – Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) on Thursday sharply criticised billionaire Elon Musk, accusing him of influencing House Republicans to derail bipartisan efforts to avert a government shutdown.
Her remarks come amidst tense negotiations in Congress over appropriations to fund the government.
“We are on the cusp of an agreement to move this country forward,” DeLauro said during her statement. However, she alleged that Musk, whom she described as a “self-appointed President of the United States,” issued directives to House Republicans to oppose their leadership and push for a government shutdown.
“House Republicans are responsible for any harm and uncertainty brought upon the American people,” DeLauro asserted, warning that the consequences of a prolonged shutdown would fall squarely on their shoulders.
She described the situation as “completely unprecedented,” highlighting Musk’s lack of knowledge about the appropriations process or government operations, yet his significant influence on legislative decisions.
DeLauro pointed to the derailing of a bipartisan and bicameral funding bill, which she said was on track to keep the government operational and ensure services for working families, middle-class households, and vulnerable populations.
“The world’s richest man, reaping billions in government contracts, is calling the shots in the Republican Party,” she charged, questioning the accountability of Congress in such a scenario.
Her remarks underscored concerns about external influences on legislative processes, particularly from individuals with no formal role in government. “It leads you to the question of who is in charge. I thought that there was a Republican majority in this body, not a President Musk majority,” she stated.
The comments come as Congress faces mounting pressure to finalise funding agreements and avert a government shutdown that could impact millions of Americans. The Republican leadership has yet to respond directly to DeLauro’s accusations.
Meanwhile, Musk has compared the Congresswoman to the fictional character Skeksis on X. “Fun fact: she was a Skeksis in Dark Crystal!”

Background on the Shutdown Debate
The U.S. Congress is racing against a deadline to pass a funding bill that would keep federal agencies operational. A failure to reach an agreement could result in a government shutdown, affecting public services and leaving federal employees without pay.
While bipartisan negotiations have made progress, divisions within the Republican Party have created roadblocks. Critics argue that external influences, such as Musk’s alleged involvement, further complicate the process.
As the debate continues, the spotlight remains on lawmakers to find a resolution that avoids further uncertainty for the American people.
