On Thursday (May 4, 2023), Calabar, Cross River State capital was filled with vibes as the state witnessed, what some call “the first Rolls Royce we have ever seen” – driven around by the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero and the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Prof. Florence Obi.
CONVERSEER reported earlier that Bayero was installed as the 6th Chancellor of the University of Calabar, following his appointment by the Federal Government.

In the flamboyant event held at the UNICAL International Conference Centre, the Emir of Kano said: “I thank the University of Calabar for the honour done to me today. Let us join hands with the current action-oriented Vice Chancellor to reach the promised land”.
On her part, Prof. Obi, who performed the ceremony, described the Chancellor as a “gentleman full of humility and honour”, adding that, “With your installation as Chancellor, you are now to preside over the 35th and subsequent convocation ceremonies in accordance with section 4 (1) of the University of Calabar Act 1979″.

The Emir of Kano also visited the Obong of Calabar, His Eminence Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi-Otu V, who said: “The visit of the Emir of Kano is, to me, historic and will go a long way to cement the existing bond of unity between the two people of Kano and Cross River State”.
Adding that, “Our University, UNICAL, is blessed to have such a sound, decent and revered Monarch, the Emir of Kano, as its Chancellor. He has the capacity to open more doors for the good of UNICAL and raise its status.”
The governor of Cross River State, Sen. Ben Ayade, when Bayero visited him, said: “Your Majesty, your appointment as the Chancellor of the University of Calabar provides us with the opportunity to show that the culture of the African man is very rich owing to our rich traditional institution
“I’m optimistic that by the time you are done overseeing the University, particularly in morality and credibility, it will become a role model to other universities in Nigeria”.
Reacting as the Emir of Kano cruises around the town in his vintage Rolls Royce, Cross Riverians said he is a First Class King with doings.

“Luxury at its peak. They have to airlift it from Kano to Calabar. Long live his majesty”, said Ashibi Thomas.
Emmanuel Ibok said: “Emir with doings. Let us try and upgrade our Obong”.
The last time a Roll Royce was driven around modern-day Calabar, was when the Oba of Benin, HRM Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Ewuare II, visited the Obong of Calabar – that was in January 2020.
