FACT CHECK: DSS take over 9th National Assembly

A viral video making the waves on social media has it that the Department of State Service, DSS on Wednesday (February 15, 2023) morning took over the National Assembly, locking out lawmakers from gaining access to the chambers. How true is this, was the video taken today as peddled on social media? Well, let us do a fact-check below.

In the viral video shared by Twitter users, @vivoexpresswisp, @simon_ekpa, @alumotis63 and @vincentchidi6, some of the lawmakers who spoke said this should not happen in a democratic system, urging whoever gave the order to increase the security apparatus.

“We have been refused to enter the National Assembly by the DSS – you can see here. We are waiting for the rest of our colleagues to come and we will see how many of us they want to kill, how many Nigerians they want to kill.

“We have told them this number of men is not enough, they should go and bring more men to stop us from entering the symbol of Nigeria’s democracy.

“This is something we raised an alarm yesterday, you can see that true to what we suspected, they are here to carry out the bidding of this APC government”, one of the Lawmakers said.

Another Lawmaker also said, “The person that gave them that order will come here today and prove it to Nigerians – order from above, what above, which office above? Are there above the God that put them there?

“Is that the change you called for? This is impunity of the highest order. You close Nigerian house, and you are telling Nigerians order from above. Is this democracy?”

VERDICT: The video is misleading, the DSS did not take over the National Assembly on Tuesday, February 15, 2023, as the Lawmakers are on recess.

The video, however, was taken four years ago when the DSS invaded the 8th Assembly headed by Sen. Bukola Saraki when it was suspected they wanted to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari.

Please, disregard the news that the DSS has taken over the 9th National Assembly headed by Sen. Ahmad Lawan as it is misleading.

Below are some of the misleading videos shared on Twitter…

APC has turned Nigeria upside down, nobody knows where we are going now. DSS blocked National Assembly.

But why is that man barking like dog🤣🤣https://t.co/sPrifJXTNw
