France transfers Contre-Amiral Protet base in Dakar to Senegalese authorities

DAKAR (CONVERSEER) – France has officially transferred control of the “Contre-Amiral Protet” military district, located within the port of Dakar, to Senegalese authorities.

The move marks a key milestone in the phased withdrawal of French forces from Senegal, in line with a timeline agreed upon by both nations.

The handover, confirmed in a statement from the French Embassy, follows bilateral agreements formalized during a joint Franco-Senegalese commission held on February 28.

The meeting was co-chaired by General Abdou Latif Kamara, French Ambassador Christine Fages, and the commander of French Forces in Senegal (EFS), General Yves Aunis.

This latest transfer follows the earlier return of the Maréchal and Saint-Exupéry military districts on March 7, both located near Hann Park in Dakar.

According to the withdrawal plan, three remaining French bases are scheduled to be handed over by the end of September 2025.

The “Contre-Amiral Protet” district holds particular strategic significance due to its location in Dakar’s port area – a longstanding hub of French military operations in West Africa.
