Human Rights Journalist Arlindo Chissale Missing for 3 Days in Mozambique

Maputo, Mozambique – Renowned Mozambican human rights journalist Arlindo Chissale has been missing for three days while travelling towards Pemba, a city in northern Mozambique.

The circumstances surrounding his disappearance remain unclear, sparking growing concerns among local and international human rights advocates.

Arlindo Chissale is well-known for his courageous reporting on human rights violations, corruption, and social justice issues, often operating in challenging environments.

His disappearance has drawn attention to the persistent dangers faced by journalists in Mozambique, particularly those covering sensitive topics.

Prof. Adriano Nuvunga, Director of the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) and Chairperson of the Southern and Mozambique Defenders called on the authorities and international community to prioritise efforts to locate Chissale.

“We urge authorities to act swiftly and decisively to locate him, and we call on the international community to raise its voice in solidarity. Every second matters. We can demand accountability and help ensure Arlindo’s safe return,” said Prof. Nuvunga.

Chissale’s disappearance is being viewed as a stark reminder of the risks faced by journalists who advocate for justice and truth in hostile environments.

Human rights organisations have emphasised the need for greater protection for journalists and stronger accountability measures to safeguard press freedom in Mozambique.

Authorities in Mozambique have yet to release an official statement on Chissale’s disappearance. However, activists continue to push for immediate action, warning that in such cases, delays can jeopardise the safety of the individual involved.

The incident has sparked a wave of concern across the media and human rights sectors, with organisations urging the international community to maintain pressure on Mozambique to ensure Chissale’s safe return.
