The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC ad-hoc staff, Miss Glory Effiom Essien was shot on Saturday during the March 18, 2023 Governorship and State House of Assembly election
in Cross River State.
Miss Essien, CONVERSEER gathered was shot while on a speed boat to conduct election in Bakassi Local Government Area of the State.
According to an eyewitness who gave his name as Felix, the victim was hit by a stray bullet shot by unknown gunmen, suspected to be militants along the waterways.
“The stray bullet hit her while she was in a speed boat heading towards Bakassi communities for election duty and she slumped.
“The ad-hoc staff, named Glory Effiom Esien, was shot by a suspected militant when the speed boat which was in motion was hit by gun bullets.
“The bullet hit her from behind while on her way to Bakassi for election duty and she almost became unconscious”, Felix said.

While confirming and reacting to the ugly incident, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Cross River State, Prof. Gabriel Yomere expressed worry and anger at the shooting of the ad-hoc staff.
Prof. Yomere added that he is happy that the bullet did not affect the victim’s spinal cord.
“The victim is responding to medical attention given to her by the doctors at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH)”, Yomere assured.
