Accra, Ghana – Former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been declared the winner of Ghana’s presidential election held on Saturday. Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, the candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), conceded defeat on Sunday.
In a concession speech, Bawumia acknowledged that his party’s internal data confirmed Mahama’s decisive victory in both the presidential and parliamentary elections.
“Our internal collation of results indicates that former President John Dramani Mahama has won the presidential election decisively,” Bawumia stated. He added that the NDC had also won a majority in parliamentary seats, despite pending collation in a few constituencies.
Bawumia noted that he was conceding ahead of the official declaration by the Electoral Commission (EC) to prevent tension and uphold Ghana’s reputation for peaceful democratic processes. “It is important that the global investor community continues to believe in Ghana’s peaceful and democratic character,” he emphasised.
While the EC has not yet announced final results, citing disruptions at collation centres by party supporters, Bawumia urged calm and cooperation to ensure a smooth process.
Mahama’s return to the presidency marks a significant political comeback, having previously led Ghana from 2012 to 2017. He is set to assume office in January 2025.
