The current Deputy Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Joseph Bassey has won the Akpabuyo/Bakassi/Calabar South Federal Constituency election held on Saturday, February 25, 2023.
Joseph Baseey also referred to as Papa was declared winner of the Akpabuyo/Bakassi/Calabar South Federal Constituency, codenamed “ABC Federal Constituency” by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday
According to the results by the INEC, Bassey polled a total of 23,885 votes to emerge the winner.
The Speaker defeated his closest rivals, Dominic Aqua Ndem of the Labour Party (LP), who polled 16,448 votes, and Rt. Hon. Essien Ayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), also polled 14,448 votes.

Joseph Bassey, currently representing the people of Calabar South State Constituency in the Cross River 9th Assembly has ended Essien Ayi’s 24-year reign (6th term) in the Federal House of Representatives.
