A look into Nigerian Women who broke and set world records in their various endeavours.
These Nigerian women have made significant contributions to their respective fields and have broken barriers to achieve remarkable feats. They serve as an inspiration and role model to millions of Nigerians and people around the world.
1. Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti
Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, a women’s rights activist, was the first Nigerian woman to drive a car and the first African woman to receive a driver’s licence. She was also a leading figure in Nigeria’s struggle for independence.
2. Chioma Ajunwa-Opara
Chioma Ajunwa-Opara, a former Nigerian track and field athlete, became the first African woman to win an Olympic gold medal in a field event when she won the long jump at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.
3. Blessing Okagbare
Blessing Okagbare, a Nigerian track and field athlete, holds the women’s 100m Commonwealth Games record and the African record for the women’s 200m race. She has won multiple medals at major international competitions.
4. Aramide Abe
Aramide Abe, a Nigerian entrepreneur, broke the Guinness World Record for the “Longest Reading Marathon (Read Aloud)” in 2018, after reading aloud for 120 hours straight. Her feat aimed to promote literacy and education in Nigeria.
5. Seun Adigun, Akuoma Omeoga, and Ngozi Onwumere
Seun Adigun, Akuoma Omeoga, and Ngozi Onwumere, the Nigerian women’s bobsled team, became the first African team to qualify for the Winter Olympics in 2018. They broke barriers and inspired a generation of African athletes.
6. Kafayat Oluwatoyin Shafau-Ameh aka Kaffy
Kafayat Oluwatoyin Shafau-Ameh, popularly known as Kaffy, is a Nigerian dancer, choreographer, and fitness instructor who holds the Guinness World Record for the “Longest Dance Party” at 52 hours and 3 minutes.
7. Folorunso Alakija
Folorunso Alakija, a Nigerian billionaire and philanthropist, became the first female Chancellor of a public university in Nigeria when she was appointed Chancellor of Osun State University in 2016.
8. Helen Paul
Helen Paul, a Nigerian comedian and actress, holds the Guinness World Record for the “Longest Stand-up Comedy Performance by an Individual” at 39 hours, 3 minutes and 44 seconds.
9. Folashade Okoya
Folashade Okoya, a Nigerian entrepreneur, broke the Guinness World Record for the “Largest Cake Mosaic” in 2014, after creating a mosaic made up of 3,000 cupcakes that measured 43.15 square meters.
10. Toby Amusan
Toby Amusan, a Nigerian track and field athlete broke the Guinness World Record for the “Fastest 100m Hurdles (Female)” on July 24, 2022, at Hayward Field, Eugene, Oregon, United States of America.
Amosun lit up the 2022 World Championships, setting a world record of 12.12 seconds and then going on to win the Gold medal.
