Madison Keys Claims First Grand Slam Title at Australian Open

MELBOURNE – American tennis player Madison Keys has defeated Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka to win the 2025 Australian Open women’s singles title.

The victory, achieved in a thrilling three-set encounter at the Rod Laver Arena on Saturday morning, marked Keys’ maiden Grand Slam triumph.

Keys, seeded 19th, entered the match as the underdog against Sabalenka, the two-time defending champion and world number one, who had been chasing her 21st consecutive win at Melbourne Park. However, the 29-year-old American delivered an exceptional performance to secure the title with a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 victory after a hard-fought two hours.

Her win made her the first player to defeat the world’s top two-ranked women at a Grand Slam since Svetlana Kuznetsova at Roland Garros in 2000. Keys also became the first to achieve this feat at the Australian Open since Serena Williams in 2005.

“I’m overwhelmed with emotions right now. It’s been a long journey, and to finally hold this trophy is a dream come true,” Keys said during her victory speech.

With this win, Keys joins an elite group of American female players who have claimed the Australian Open title, including Lindsay Davenport (2000), Jennifer Capriati (2001, 2002), Serena Williams (2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2017), and Sofia Kenin (2020).

Sabalenka, while gracious in defeat, congratulated Keys on her historic achievement. “It’s been an incredible run here in Melbourne, and I’ll keep working hard to come back stronger,” she said.

Keys’ triumph solidifies her place among the top players in women’s tennis, with her determination and tactical prowess shining through on one of the sport’s grandest stages.
