Abeokuta, Nigeria – The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Akintoye Waris for allegedly stealing and slaughtering a he-goat valued at ₦200,000 to celebrate his child’s naming ceremony.
The arrest, which was confirmed by the state police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, took place on January 2, 2025, in the Odeda area of Ogun State.
Waris’ alleged accomplice, Ajayi Yusuf, was also arrested.
According to reports, the suspects stole the goat from a local farm on December 25, 2024, while its owner, identified only as Mark, was away grazing other livestock.
Community members reportedly saw Waris and Yusuf transporting the goat on a motorcycle towards Olodo town.
Acting on a tip-off, detectives apprehended the suspects, who confessed during interrogation to stealing, transporting, and slaughtering the goat on December 27, 2024.
Odutola, in a statement on Saturday, explained, “During interrogation, the suspects confessed to the crime, explaining how they stole, transported, and later slaughtered the he-goat. They disclosed that the goat was used to prepare food for the naming ceremony of Akintoye Waris’s daughter, which was held in Olodo.”
The suspects are currently in custody and undergoing further investigation at the Divisional Crime Branch. Authorities have assured the public that they will face prosecution upon the conclusion of the investigation.
