CALABAR – In a dynamic gathering ahead of International Youth Day, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), in collaboration with 360 Degree for Women Empowerment, convened a three-day youth summit at the Hogis Hotel in Calabar, Cross River State. The event, themed “The Role of Youth in the Sustenance of Peace and Development in the Niger Delta Region,” aimed to transform youthful energy into productive economic ventures while addressing some of Nigeria’s most pressing challenges.Over the course of the summit, youth from various parts of the state gathered to explore innovative pathways for conflict resolution, economic empowerment, and digital transformation. Organisers stressed the importance of harnessing the potential of digital technologies—from mobile device services to artificial intelligence—to drive sustainable development and advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).The summit featured a diverse agenda that included panel discussions, interactive sessions, cultural displays, and certificate presentations. Key discussions centered on pressing issues such as insecurity, unemployment, poverty, and the challenges posed by youth restrictiveness in the region. Participants were encouraged to share ideas and experiences on how to leverage digital economy tools to create multiple streams of income and drive local development.Mr Onyekachi Nwamkpa, representing 360 Degree for Women Empowerment, underscored the event’s commitment to youth empowerment. “Today marks a significant celebration,” he said during the closing session on Friday, 14 February 2025. “We’re excited to assemble sustainable development digital technologies, including mobile device services and artificial intelligence, to advance the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. We believe the youths present here today will greatly benefit from the insightful lectures and networking opportunities with fellow participants. We’re honored to host this event and pray that every youth present will gain valuable knowledge and insights.”Closing the summit, Dr Daniel Ajunwa, the State Director of the NDDC, expressed gratitude to all stakeholders for their contributions.Represented by Dr (Mrs) Eme Inyang-Abia, Assistant Director for Agric/Fisheries, Ajunwa acknowledged the collaborative efforts behind the event.“We’re grateful to the Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, for bringing the International Youth Day Celebration 2025 to our state. Today, we’ve gathered to learn, make new friends, and celebrate. As the saying goes, ‘No one has the monopoly of knowledge.’ I’ve learned so much from our facilitators, especially about improving my finances in today’s Nigeria. We all need multiple streams of income, and I’ve discovered new ways to use my phone to make money,” she remarked.Dr Inyang-Abia’s comments resonated with many young attendees, who lauded the summit for not only broadening their understanding of digital technologies but also for highlighting practical steps to improve their livelihoods. The event provided a platform for young people to network, exchange ideas, and form partnerships that could translate into long-term economic growth and community development.Meanwhile, Rt. Hon. Orok Duke, Commissioner Representing Cross River at the NDDC has reiterated the commitment of President Bola Tinubu-led administration in youths development. As the summit drew to a close, the prevailing sentiment was one of optimism and renewed purpose. Participants left with a clearer vision of how digital innovations and collaborative efforts could serve as catalysts for peace and development in the Niger Delta. The organizers hope that the insights gained and networks formed during the summit will continue to drive transformative initiatives across the region. With the promise of more such initiatives on the horizon, the NDDC and its partners remain committed to empowering youth, promoting digital literacy, and fostering an environment where young people are at the forefront of building a resilient and prosperous future for the Niger Delta.
