The Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa and former Presidential Candidate for the 2019 general election, Madam Oby Ezekwesili have traded words on Twitter, a microblogging platform known for its openness.
CONVERSEER gathered that the brawl started after a Nigerian suspected to live in Indonesia called out Abike, who is also the SSA on Diaspora over the ill-treatment meted on them in the diaspora.
However, the Diaspora Commission Chairman was not pleased with the replied tweet made by one @sensegiver1, which said: “She should go to Indonesia and see how Nigerians are treated. Mumu woman supporting a failed government. She’s equally part of the failure. Eye service!”

Abike had earlier quoted a tweet by Ashok Swain, @ashowai, a professor of Peace and Conflict Research, which stated that “Nigerian students are being attacked in a University Campus near Delhi – 30,000 Nigerian students come to study in India paying money, 50,000 Indians live in Nigeria to make money”.

Quoting the above tweet, Abike using her verified official Twitter handle, @abikedabiri, wrote: “This happened Saturday, as a result of a fracas, during a football match between African and Indian Students. The Nigerian mission immediately took custody of 86 Nigerian students, invited the representatives of the Indian government, and got their commitment to ensuring the safety of the students who then returned back to campus on Sunday.
“Calm has returned to the campus. A few injuries were recorded and further investigations are ongoing.
“The Nigerian mission had made it clear that the Indian authorities would be held responsible if anything happens to any of the students
“There is already a written commitment by the Indian Authorities to protect our students.
“Any student feeling threatened should please report to the Nigerian mission in Delhi immediately”.

However, the tweet didn’t go well with many Nigerians like @sensegiver1 above, who claimed Abike has always accused Nigerians abroad of doing drugs, cultism and other vices.
Replying @sensegiver1 for calling her “mumu”, Abike said: “Ode! You go to Indonesia, carry drugs, do cultism and come begging to be rescued from death sentence . Thank God for @ndlea_nigeria now saving people like you from death row”.

Abike’s reply as a public office holder has caused an uproar in the #TwitterNG community, with Ezekwesili, convener of #BringBackOurGirls, taking to the centre stage to replied her, saying, “Dear Abike @abikedabiri, What is this? Kai. This is messy. Please clean it up. Quickly. Please.”

The reply by Oby didn’t go well with Abike either, who also replied by saying “I’m done on this. But out of respect for you, will ask, Clean what up? It’s okay for some untrained, uncouth guy to refer to me as “mumu”, and I can’t call him “ode”. I’m not a public official that cows to bullying please.”

Oby, then replied Abike again, saying “Dear Abike @abikedabiri, your choice.”

She went further to write another epistle, saying “Nigeria’s ineffectual leadership is frankly a problem for not just our Citizens.
“For example, leaders of our sister-countries in Africa -including the ones that don’t really like us- often say how much they miss Nigeria’s strong leadership on things that affect the continent.
“Ineffectual leadership in Nigeria is often reflected in the poor quality of representation of the country at global or continental conversations. Too bad.
“Imagine how often fellow Africans or others ask “Where is Nigeria?” or say, “We seriously miss Nigeria.” I heard another.”

She added “An African leader asked me at breakfast to help him resolve something that puzzles him about Nigeria.
“I, like many others know and see individual Nigerians excelling in diverse endeavours. But Nigeria as a Country does not reflect this. Why, Oby?”
“Simple,” I said.
