Nsukka elites downgrade Gov. Ugwuanyi’s good works in the area, says Commissioner

The Enugu State Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Mr Peter Okonkwo, has said that some Nsukka elites are downgrading Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s performance in the area.

Gov. Ugwuanyi is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Enugu North Senatorial zone for the forthcoming election.

Speaking when Gov. Ugwuanyi visited the traditional ruler of Echara Nsukka Autonomous Community, HRH Christopher Ezugwu, at his palace, Okonkwo said Gov. Ugwuanyi “holds the oath of justice against Nsukka elites condemning his good works.”

Okonkwo revealed that “there is a conspiracy of the elites, but the conspiracy cannot eliminate the hard facts,” saying: “People of Nsukka, this man (Ugwuanyi) here that God has brought to us has done for Nsukka what no government has done since the history of democracy.

“The only time we saw something like this was when Zik (Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe) brought the University of Nigeria to Nsukka and he has done for Nsukka, what he never did for his people in Orba town and Udenu Local Government Area.

“The road (dual carriageway) constructed from Opi down to Nsukka was done by RCC. RCC has never done any road in Nigeria except the ones awarded by the Federal Government, but he (Ugwuanyi) used it for Nsukka.

Okonkwo also listed Obechara road, New Anglican Road, which was flooded for over 20 years as a result of abandonment, as some of the good works done by Gov. Ugwuanyi’s administration.

“After seeing the things and roads he constructed in Nsukka land which everyone of us ply today, just know that you have benefited and Nsukka land has also benefited.

“Your Excellency, the people gathered here today are organic people from their different homes; these are the true voters. Echara is indebted to you and we are going to pay you back in folds.

“What we are doing now is door-to-door campaign. Rally is just for public show. We have bulk votes and we will deliver you and other PDP candidates in the state,” Okonkwo said.

Other speakers, such as HRH Ezugwu, the councilor of Nkpunanaw Ward, Dickson Ezeah, the President General of Echara Town Union, George Okonkwo, the leader of Echara Youth Association, Onyekachi Ezema, appreciated Gov. Ugwuanyi for the network of roads his administration constructed in Nsukka town.

They noted that their community benefited largely from the roads and other numerous development projects in Nsukka zone such as the establishment of the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences, SUMAS, Igbo-Eno.

Others are the newly-constructed ultra-modern Township Stadium in Nsukka; the Federal Polytechnic, Ohodo, which he attracted; primary, secondary and tertiary school projects; and health facilities, among others.

They reassured Gov. Ugwuanyi of their 100 per cent votes for him and other PDP candidates, including the party’s governorship candidate, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, his running mate, Ifeanyi Ossai, and others. (NAN)
