Some passengers who boarded a Bolt, 21st Century mobility taxi, have stabbed its driver to death in Calabar, Cross River State.
CONVERSEER gathered that the incident occurred on Friday (May 26) night at about 10pm around Mary Slessor Avenue, Calabar Municipality.
According to Calabar Parrot, the Bolt driver identified as Francis Atabi was giving his passengers a ride, “when they got to Mary Slessor, they started struggling the car steering with him in an attempt to steal his car”.
Continuing, the report which quoted an anonymous eyewitness said, “Atabi refused to let go of his vehicle. While the ones behind tried to strangle him with a rope tied to his neck, the other one on the passenger seat was busy stabbing him multiple times with a knife.
“The Bolt driver, even with all the stabbings and struggling refused to let go and in the process, the vehicle which was already swaying left and right on the road rammed into a man passing by. The man is alleged to have died on the spot.
“After the incident happened, the thieves got off the car and ran away, leaving the Bolt driver in his pool of blood”.
CONVERSEER further learned that Atabi managed to find his way into the General Hospital located along Mary Slessor Avenue with the aid of some persons around but, “was rejected and referred to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) because of the high degree injuries he got from the multiple stabs which must have affected his heart.
“Unfortunately, he died before arriving at Teaching Hospital that night”, the source added.
When contacted on the phone on Saturday (May 27) morning, SP Irene Ugbo, Police spokesperson in Cross River State told CONVERSEER that they are trailing the perpetrators.
Ugbo who assured that the car snatchers will be arrested, said: “I heard about it and that the boy was rushed to the hospital and he died.
“It is a case of car snatching, we are on it. I called the OC Anti-Kidnapping this morning, and he said they are on it.
“They will arrest those hoodlums”.
