A reckless driver driving a black Lexus RX 300 Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) ran over four students of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) inside the campus.

CONVERSEER gathered that the ugly incident happened on Wednesday (May 17) beside the university’s Senate Chambers.

According to an eyewitness, Eyaks Udoka, the driver was overspeeding when he rammed into the unfortunate students.

The victims were rushed to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) shortly after the accident.

“I was there when it happened. The driver was at high speed otherwise he would have controlled the car without jumping across the gutter. The victims were unconscious when they took them to the hospital, Udoka said.

Another source, Nsikak Ibatt said the driver also hit an electric pole, putting the institution into a total blackout.

“…there will be a temporary shortage of power supply on Campus due to this – a high-tension cable was affected as a result of the accident”, Ibatt said, adding that, “the driver lost control when he had the crash.

“Three out of the four students were discharged when I visited the hospital – and they are all fine”, he said.

Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor of UNICAL, Prof. Florence Obi who later visited the victims of the accident at the Teaching Hospital on Thursday (May 18), offered financial assistance for their medication.

However, 3 of the victims have been discharged from the hospital while one is still undergoing medical attention at the time Obi visited.

The Vice-Chancellor while wishing the victims quick recovery, urged staff, students and visitors of the University to be careful, and adhere strictly to speed limits and regulations while driving on campus.

Prof. Obi stated further that the University under her administration will always place a premium on the health and safety of students on campus and beyond.

She was accompanied by the University’s Bursar, Mr Joseph Odum; the Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. Tony Enyang; Mr Dominic Okpene; the Students’ Union Government, SUG President, Comr. Tyron Bassey; and several others.
