Senate Declares Edo Governor Okpebholo’s Seat Vacant, Asks INEC to Conduct By-Election

Abuja, Nigeria – Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has formally lost his seat at the Red Chambers as the Senate has declared it vacant.

Converseer reports that the brand new Governor’s seat at the Senate was declared vacant on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The decision was sequel to a motion by the Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South).

Moro said, “This vacancy has become necessary following Senator Monday Okpebholo’s inauguration as governor of Edo State, and in accordance with the Constitution, his seat is now deemed vacant, and we invite you to declare.”

Akpabio, therefore, asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a by-election to fill the vacancy.

“In line with your letter and the Constitution, the seat of Edo Central senatorial district is hereby declared vacant,” Akpabio said.

Converseer further reports that Senator Okpebholo, before his emergence as Governor, represented Edo Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly.
