Abuja, Nigeria – A tragic stampede occurred at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, Abuja, during a food distribution event on Saturday, December 21, 2024, resulting in the loss of 10 lives, including four children, and leaving eight others injured.
The incident, which took place around 6:30 AM, unfolded as over a thousand individuals, mostly vulnerable and elderly persons, gathered for the charitable activity.
Emergency responders, including the FCT Police Rapid Response Squad and the FCT Joint Task Force, swiftly intervened to manage the crowd and prevent further casualties.
Four of the injured victims have been treated and discharged, while others remain hospitalised.
In a statement signed by SP Josephine Adeh, Police Public Relations Officer, FCT Police Command, Abuja, on Saturday, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command expressed deep sorrow over the incident.
According to the statement, Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, visited the injured in the hospital to provide support and reassure the victims.
The Command emphasised the importance of notifying authorities about large gatherings to ensure adequate security arrangements.
Organisers of public events, religious activities, or charitable initiatives are now mandated to inform the Police Command in advance to prevent similar occurrences.
Failure to comply with this directive, according to the Police, will lead to liability for any resulting incidents.
