The 60-year-old suspect, who had barricaded himself inside his shop in the village of Gonnoi near Larissa on Sunday after confessing to committing a double murder, died by suicide after firing five shots at the scene.

Authorities reported that he first fired into the air with a Kalashnikov rifle before turning the weapon on himself. Police had previously evacuated nearby homes due to concerns about a possible grenade at the location.

The suspect reportedly confessed to killing the two men following a financial dispute. Bomb disposal experts were on-site, though no grenade was found to be a threat.

The two victims were confirmed dead at the scene.
