The Taraba Independent Peace Committee, has urged warring communities in Ussa and Bali Local Government areas of the state to give peace a chance in order to foster development.
Prof. Talla Ngarka, Chairman of the Committee, made the call on Tuesday at a press conference in Jalingo.
He condemned the crisis and called on security agencies to investigate the incidents and quickly restore peace in the affected communities.
“We have been working tirelessly to maintain peace in the state and to galvanize citizens’ support towards achieving sustainable peace and development.
“It is sad that while we were making efforts to galvanize citizens’ support for a peaceful Taraba after a successful election, crisis erupted again in Ussa local government area.
“Killing of scores of people and rendering many homeless while property worth millions of Naira were destroyed.
“The committee is also in receipt of yet another breach of peace in Dugwer community of Bali Local Government Area where one person was killed and scores of people injured over land tussle,” Ngarka said.
He urged Gov. Darius Ishaku to wade into the alleged forceful eviction of the people of Dugwer community and ensure that the right thing was done.
He said if the government was interested in acquiring land in the community as alleged, it should do the right thing.
Ngarka appealed to candidates and political parties taking part in the re-run election on April 15 in Takum, Donga and Ussa Federal Constituency, to be peaceful and abide by the rules of the election. (NAN)
