Transforming the Ivory Tower: The Giant Strides of Prof. Obi in 4 years

Since Prof. Florence Obi took over the mantle of leadership as the 11th and first female Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) four years ago, she has left nothing to chance in her avowed determination to enthrone academic excellence, infrastructural development, and student welfare.

Prof. Obi’s passion for academic excellence has driven her to implement various reforms aimed at enhancing the quality of education at the University of Calabar. One of her notable achievements is the strengthening of the university’s academic programs, ensuring that students receive a world-class education. Her desire to churn out graduates as and when due has led to a significant reduction in the delay of student results.

To ensure the integrity of the examination process, Prof. Obi has empowered the Quality Assurance Directorate to oversee exams. This move has not only improved the quality of exams but also reduced the incidence of malpractice. The serialization of exam scripts is another measure she has introduced to ensure the integrity of the examination process.

During her tenure, the VC has overseen significant infrastructural development projects. The construction of new classroom blocks and the renovation of hostels have improved the learning environment for students. These projects have not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal of the university but also provided students with modern facilities that support their academic pursuits.

The remodelling and building of lecture halls, as well as the rehabilitation of internal roads within the university, are testaments to Prof. Obi’s commitment to creating a conducive learning environment. The ongoing construction of a multi-purpose event centre, facilitated with the assistance of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (Tetfund), is another significant project that will provide a modern space for events and activities.

As a Professor of Education, the VC awarded scholarships to 34 high-flying students of the institution with over 4.00 CGPA in its maiden “Vice Chancellor Scholarship Award Scheme”.

The scholarship will last throughout the duration of the studies of the students provided they maintain the highest CGPA in the department, which must not be less than 4.00.

Due to her strong commitment and dedication to teaching and learning, students of the institution have won many academic laurels in different competitions across the country, one of which is the recently concluded 11th All Nigerian Universities Debating Championship competition, where UNICAL emerged second, and the Regional Law Competition where the institution emerged victorious amongst others.

Recently, the VC secured NUC accreditation for over 39 courses of the institution, thereby boosting the institution’s image and restoring the confidence of students, staff and the university’s community.

Prof. Obi has also prioritized student welfare and career services to help students transition successfully from school to the world of work. She took it upon herself to refurbish halls of residences for students, which were destroyed during the #EndSARS protest. This demonstration of her commitment to student welfare is laudable.

The university has also witnessed an improvement in student support services, including counselling, mentorship, and career guidance. These initiatives have helped to enhance the overall student experience, providing students with the support they need to succeed.

As the first female Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Obi has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills. Her ability to build and maintain relationships with alumni and stakeholders, including students, staff, and the wider community, has been instrumental in promoting a sense of unity and purpose within the university.

Prof. Obi’s leadership style is characterized by transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness. She has fostered a culture of openness and communication, encouraging feedback and suggestions from stakeholders. This approach has helped to build trust and confidence in her leadership.

Despite her numerous achievements, Prof. Obi has faced several challenges during her tenure. One of the significant challenges has been managing the expectations of various stakeholders, including students, staff, and the government. Additionally, the university has faced financial constraints, which have impacted its ability to implement some projects.

To address these challenges, Prof. Obi has emphasized the need for collaboration and partnerships. She has worked tirelessly to build relationships with external stakeholders, including government agencies, private sector organizations, and alumni. These partnerships have helped to attract funding and resources, supporting the university’s development projects.

Under her administration, UNICAL Radio 103.5FM has come alive, broadcasting within the university’s community and beyond. The Radio station now serves as a major source of campus news for students, staff and residents in the Calabar metropolis and beyond. The station is now creating practical skills for students of Mass Communication and shaping their academic pursuits.

As Prof. Obi marks four years on the saddle on the 1st of December, she has shown no sign of slowing down in her desire to change the trajectory and narrative of the second-generation citadel of learning. She has remained true to her vision of transforming the institution into a world-class institution. Her focus on academic excellence, infrastructural development, and student welfare has continued to drive her leadership. With her exceptional leadership skills, vision, and dedication, Prof. Obi is poised to leave a lasting legacy at the University of Calabar.
