The past couple of weeks have witnessed pockets of gang wars in Secondary Schools in Cross River State with the latest happening at Government College, Ikot Ansa Calabar.
CONVERSEER learned that two rival gangs clashed on Wednesday at Government College leading to disruption of academic activities and serious injuries to some of the students.
According to a video shared by Agba Jalingo, the clash was between SS2 students who invited their gang (made of teenagers) to fight with SS3 Students of the aforementioned school.
One of the teachers was heard speaking in the video saying that the students were driven for nonpayment of school fees but returned to start a fight.
The teachers were overwhelmed by the weapon-wielding students.
CONVERSEER reports that a similar incident happened on the 27th of October 2023 at Technical College, 8 Miles where a student was beaten to a pulp by a rival gang within the school environment.
“The students were wielding weapons, including cutlasses, axes and guns and one of the students fainted during the fight,” a source who pleaded anonymity said.
The source added, “They chased one student and pushed him to the road where he was knocked down by a motorcycle.”
Cultism is on the increase in secondary schools in Nigeria and it looks as if the authorities are not concerned.
Former Governor Ben Ayade through his Special Adviser on Education, Mr Castro Ezama tried to quell the menace but since the expiration of the administration, no one has been appointed into that position to fight the evil.
