BAD HOMBURG (CONVERSEER) – Mirra Andreeva staged a determined comeback to defeat Clara Tauson and reach the quarter-finals of the Bad Homburg Open on Wednesday, ending a two-year wait for a win on grass.
The 17-year-old Russian, seeded third in the tournament, rallied from a set down to beat the Dane 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 in a hard-fought contest that lasted over two hours. It was Andreeva’s first victory on grass since she overcame Anastasia Potapova in the third round of Wimbledon in 2023.
Tauson, ranked 23rd in the world, made a strong start by converting her only break point of the opening set in the sixth game to take the lead. However, Andreeva responded with a powerful second set, dominating her service games by winning 80% of points on her first serve and 75% on her second.
With the match level, the momentum shifted decisively in Andreeva’s favour during the decider. After a marathon third game in which she broke Tauson’s serve, the Russian didn’t look back, reeling off three straight breaks as her opponent began to fade physically.
Andreeva will now face Linda Noskova in the quarter-finals. The Czechs overcame a sluggish start to defeat Croatia’s Donna Vekic 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 in another three-set encounter.
All four singles matches played in Bad Homburg on Wednesday went the distance. Seventh seed Elina Svitolina was edged out by Beatriz Haddad Maia 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7), while eighth seed Ekaterina Alexandrova triumphed over Maria Sakkari 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3.
Andreeva holds a 3-1 advantage in her previous meetings with Noskova, adding further intrigue to their upcoming last-eight clash as she aims to extend her impressive resurgence on grass.
