Calabar, Nigeria – The former Minister of Culture and Tourism, High Chief Edem Duke, has lauded the 2024 Calabar Carnival as the biggest and most successful in recent years, citing increased turnout, substantial resources, and heightened international attention.
Speaking on Saturday during a victory party celebrating Calas Vegas Band’s win in the carnival, Duke praised the event for its remarkable growth.
As the leader of the Calas Vegas Band, he highlighted that both competing and non-competing bands demonstrated exceptional commitment and invested significantly beyond the grants provided.
“The Carnival, from all indications, was bigger than what we’ve had in the recent past. The turnout of bands was more impressive, and we saw a considerable increase in international attention and media exposure. This year’s event has set a new benchmark and a milestone for the carnival,” Duke remarked.
He attributed the success of the Calas Vegas Band to the creativity and dedication of its members and the effective interpretation of the carnival’s theme.
Duke also credited the band’s leadership for its strategic approach to ensuring victory.
To further enhance the carnival, he called for early planning, broader stakeholder engagement, and enhanced marketing efforts to sustain its momentum.
The event was graced by prominent personalities, including Senator Florence Ita-Giwa, Leader of the Seagull Band; Commissioner for Tourism Abubakar Ewa; Hon. Stanley Nsemo of the State House of Assembly; and Executive Secretary of the Carnival Commission, Austin Cobham.
The 2024 Calabar Carnival has indeed set a precedent for future editions, reflecting the governor’s vision of continuous growth and international acclaim for the event.
