Calabar, Cross River State – The 2024 Governor’s Cup Football Competition in Cross River State will see 32 teams face off for the coveted trophy, with the tournament’s official draws held at the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar.
The participating teams include 18 local government teams and 14 private clubs from across the state.
The Chairman of the Cross River State Football Association, Apostle Essien Ayi, announced the lineup during the event.
Represented by Greg Abang, the First Vice Chairman of the association, Apostle Ayi confirmed that matches would be hosted at various venues in Calabar, Awi, Ekori, Ikom, Ogoja, Yala, and Obudu, ensuring broad participation across the state.
Honourable Agnes Atsu, the Commissioner for Sports Development, officially declared the draws open on behalf of Governor Senator Bassey Otu.
In her address, she emphasised the government’s commitment to promoting local sports talent and providing platforms for community engagement through football.
Private football clubs participating this year include notable teams such as Peace Angels FC of Yala, Achu Olaye FC of Bekwarra, Flying Stars of Ikom, Bakor United of Ogoja, Ababene United of Obubra, and several clubs based in Calabar, including Diamond Stars, Liberty Lions, E-World FC, Crystal Academy, and Prince 7 FC, among others.
The event saw a large turnout from the sports community, including Ekanem Ekpenyong, Special Adviser to the Governor on Sports Development, and Etta Lawrence, Senior Special Assistant on Sports. Board members of the state football association, representatives from each participating club, referees, match commissioners, and coaches were also in attendance.
Attendees voiced concerns over security measures and the need for adequate medical support at the venues.
Ekpenyong reassured them that the government has made provisions to ensure a safe and secure tournament with medical response teams on standby at all match locations.
The Governor’s Cup promises to be an exciting showcase of local talent, with fans across Cross River eagerly anticipating the competition’s kickoff.
