China launches world’s largest ethanol project

According to China Aerospace Science and Technology Group Co., Ltd., the world’s largest ethanol project was successfully launched for the first time.

It successfully started up and produced high-quality ethanol, marking China’s progress in the field of converting coal-based methanol into clean energy ethanol.

The independent research and development technology has reached the world’s leading level and is of great significance in promoting the coal chemical industry to become high-end, diversified and low-carbon.

According to reports, the project is the 600,000 tons/year ethanol combined unit of Anhui Carbonxin Technology Co., Ltd.’s methanol comprehensive utilisation project.

Beijing No. 11 Institute provided it with 220 products such as torches, slag breakers, safety valves, breathing valves, and flame arresters.

It is a key equipment for emergency gas discharge of the combined unit, slag crushing, overpressure protection of pipelines and storage and transportation tank areas, and fire prevention.

It was learned that the ethanol production unit of the second phase of the methanol comprehensive utilisation project of Carbon Xin Technology relies on the main product methanol of the first phase as raw material and adopts the DMTE process technology with independent intellectual property rights of the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences; after reaching production, it can achieve annual With a production capacity of 600,000 tons of anhydrous ethanol, it is currently the largest single-series anhydrous ethanol production facility in the world.

The project was officially handed over on 20 October 2023; trial production was launched on 20 December 2023, and the one-time start-up was successful on 28 February 2024. It took 20 months to complete the project and 2 months to start the whole process.

The Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that currently the world’s ethanol production is about 100 million tons, mainly produced by the United States, Brazil and other countries using crop raw materials such as grain or sugar cane, and is mainly used as fuel ethanol.

China’s ethanol market has a large demand and a serious shortage of production capacity.

In 2022, China produced about 2.7 million tons of fuel ethanol through the old grain fermentation route, leaving a gap of 10 million tons. Since traditional ethanol production involves competing with people for food, opening up a non-food ethanol production route is of strategic significance to China. The development of this technology is also a long-term challenge worldwide.
