7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Levels Bangkok Apartments to Rubble (Video)

A 7.7 magnitude earthquake has stuck Myanmar with the quake so powerful tremors were also felt in Thailand and China. 

Terrifying scenes unfolded in Bangkok as a high-rise building collapsed while people screamed as they ran for safety.  

The earthquake hit at around 1.30pm on March 28. 

The epicenter was located 10 miles northwest of the Burmese city of Sagaing, near the city Mandalay, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). 

Footage shared online has shown buildings reduced to dust and rubble as people caught in the tremors were left unable to stand. 

Many residents of in the densely populated Thai capital were evacuated from their buildings as the quake was forceful enough to send water sloshing out of pools, including some located in high-rises. There are no immediate reports of casualties but several videos posted online have shown buildings collapsing. 

One video of a building site in the Chatuchak area of Bangkok showed the construction site crumbling during the tremors as workers ran for safety. 

A  cloud of dust erupted from the multi-story building as onlookers screamed and ran. 

A tourist traveling on Bangkok’s skytrain at the time took to X to report that he felt the tremors before witnessing the building collapse from a distance. 

“Not sure what’s happening in Bangkok right now; I was on the BTS when it started shaking like an earthquake at a stop and we all got off to see this in the distance. Past Chatuchak Park from the Mo Chit @BTS_SkyTrain station… now looking like ashes are falling,” he wrote. 

Videos that appeared to have been captured in the Myanmar city of Mandalay showed the iconic Ava Bridge falling into the water while another clip showed residents panicking as what appeared to be a residential building collapsed sideways. 

Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra called an emergency meeting to assess the impact of the quake. Thailand’s Department of Disaster Preventaion said the quake was felt in amost all regions of the country.
