Unknown gunmen have attempted to break into the Afokang Correctional Centre (formerly Afokang Prison) in Calabar, Cross River State capital.
CONVERSEER gathered that the incident happened on Wednesday (18 Oct. 2023), leading to the death of a prison guard who was on duty.
In a telephone conversation with CONVERSEER on Thursday (19 Oct. 2023), DSC Effanga Etim, Public Relations Officer of Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS) said the gunmen were repelled by the guard on duty.
Etim said the unknown gunmen were trying to attack the Correctional facility from the back but their men repelled them leading to the death of one of the personnel on duty.

“The incident happened yesterday (Wednesay) at about 6 hours of the day.
“It was unknown gunmen who attempted to attack the facility but had a direct shot at the personnel who were booked on that day.
“They were trying to attack the behind of the facility and unfortunately, through the repellent of arms, they shot one of the officers on guard,” he said.
ASC Etim said he did not know the intention of the unknown gunmen, adding that they did not succeed in their operations.
“They did not succeed in their operation, through repellent by the forces, they shot one of our men dead”, he said.
