Suspended British Labour MP Mike Amesbury has pleaded guilty to assaulting a man during a late-night altercation in Cheshire.

The incident, which occurred in October 2024, has further complicated the political future of the Runcorn & Helsby representative.

According to reports from GB News, Amesbury admitted to a charge of assault by beating during a hearing at Chester Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

The altercation took place on Main Street, Frodsham, at 2:48 a.m. on October 26, 2024. During the dispute, Amesbury, 55, struck 45-year-old Paul Fellows, an incident captured on video and widely circulated on social media.

The video footage, which played a significant role in the case, showed the heated confrontation escalating, resulting in the assault. Prosecutors formally charged Amesbury on October 29 after reviewing evidence submitted just days earlier.

Following the incident, the Labour Party swiftly suspended Amesbury and withdrew the party whip in late October, distancing itself from the embattled MP. The suspension reflects the party’s zero-tolerance stance on misconduct among its members.

Amesbury’s guilty plea casts a shadow over his political career and raises broader questions about accountability and conduct in public office. The case also highlights the scrutiny politicians face in the age of social media, where actions can quickly become public knowledge and lead to significant consequences.

This development may prompt renewed discussions within the Labour Party and other political institutions about the importance of upholding ethical standards, both publicly and privately, among their members.
