  • Oando seals underwriting pact with Afreximbank’s insurance subsidiary

Oando Plc has entered into a strategic partnership with AfrexInsure, the specialty insurance subsidiary of African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), the bank disclosed in a statement issued in Cairo on Monday.

The deal allows AfrexInsure to provide critical risk management solutions to Oando by ensuring that the lender’s investment in the energy company’s Nigerian operations is adequately protected.

Afreximbank stated that the synergy will boost Oando’s resilience, promote sustainable energy development and strengthen Afreximbank’s commitment to economic growth and regional stability in the trade ecosystem through mitigation of operational and geopolitical risks.

“This strategic collaboration between Oando and AfrexInsure will help promote local content in Africa’s oil and gas sector,” said Jonas Mushosho, CEO and principal officer of AfrexInsure.

“The collaboration, which also underscores a shared commitment aimed at fostering economic empowerment and contributing to the sustainable development of Africa’s natural resources, will also strengthen the African insurance sector by retaining premium flows within the continent and fostering Africa’s financial sustainability,” he added.

Afreximbank’s business relationship with Oando has been marked by a couple of key financing initiatives.

Last August, the lender facilitated a $650 million financing of Oando’s full acquisition of the Nigerian Agip Oil Company from Eni. The transaction is anticipated to help scale the company’s production capacity fivefold to 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.

In June 2024, Oando through its subsidiary Oando Trading contributed $550 million to a $925 million accordion facility arranged by Afreximbank, enabling it to participate in a $3.3 billion structured crude oil-backed finance facility called “Project Gazelle,” which was sponsored by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.

An accordion allows a borrower to increase the maximum limit permitted on a loan facility or add a term loan to an existing loan agreement.

“We have a longstanding relationship with Afreximbank where we have seen the Bank support our vision for energy in Africa, not only with essential financing but also with invaluable guidance and advisory support,” Wale Tinubu, Oando’s chief executive, said.

“Following our recent acquisition, a tailored risk identification and mitigation approach is paramount. We are confident that our collaboration with AfrexInsure will provide the necessary oversight to ensure both the adequacy and comprehensiveness of our risk management strategy,” he added.

Oando is listed in Lagos as well as in Johannesburg. The company reported an 8.6 per cent jump in net profit to N65.5 billion in 2024.

  • Tourists, locals enjoy ‘ephemeral’ Tokyo cherry blossoms

Tourists and Japanese locals marveled at Tokyo’s cherry trees on Monday at the peak of the annual blossom season that traditionally represents fresh starts but also life’s fleeting impermanence.

Crowds flocked to the city’s top locations to take photos and hold picnics under the elegant dark branches bursting with pink and white flowers, known as sakura in Japanese.

“Honestly it feels pretty amazing to be here. It’s honestly better than we expected. And it only comes around every once in a while and only for a short span of time,” Christian Sioting, a tourist from the Philippines, told AFP. “It’s an ephemeral experience and we’re pretty happy that we got to be here and to witness it in full bloom too.”

The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) on Sunday declared the country’s most common and popular somei yoshino variety of cherry tree in full bloom in Tokyo.

Although this year’s blooming dates are around the average, the JMA says climate change and the urban heat-island effect are causing sakura to flower approximately 1.2 days earlier every 10 years.

“Seeing photos is another thing, but being here, (to) really see the sakura in your eyes… it’s really amazing,” said Ralf Ng from Hong Kong.

A weak yen is attracting more visitors than ever to Japan, with national tourism figures released in January showing a record of about 36.8 million arrivals last year.

Tokyo resident Kayoko Yoshihara, 69, organizes annual flower-viewing picnics with her friends, including one held last week as the cherry trees began to bloom.

“After enduring the cold winter, the cherry blossoms bloom and it makes you feel like you’re motivated to head towards summer,” she told AFP.

Nurse Nanami Kobayashi, 31, said the peak of the blossom season left her without words.

“When the trees are at full bloom, it’s so beautiful that you just become speechless,” she said.

  • World Water Day 2025: NBC and QFA Unite for Sustainability and Clean Water Initiatives

In commemoration of World Water Day 2025, Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC), a member of Coca-Cola HBC (CCHBC) and the bottling partner of The Coca-Cola Company, alongside Quality Foods Africa (QFA), operator of Dodo Pizza, Krispy Kreme, Scoop’d IceCream and Burger Nation, have reinforced their commitment to water stewardship and environmental sustainability across Nigeria.

World Water Day, observed annually on March 22, is a United Nations initiative that highlights the importance of freshwater and advocates for sustainable water management.
The 2025 theme, “Glacier Preservation,” emphasizes the vital role of glaciers in sustaining life and maintaining the global water cycle.

Oluwasoromidayo George, Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Director at NBC highlighted the company’s initiatives across several states, engaging communities, environmental advocates, and stakeholders to promote water conservation.

Water is life—it sustains people, communities, and ecosystems. As the main ingredient in our products, we take our responsibility seriously by using it efficiently, treating it responsibly, and ensuring safe water returns to the communities we serve.
Our World Water Day initiatives reflect this unwavering commitment, George stated.

NBC’s activities spanned multiple locations, including Maiduguri, Kano, Lagos, Abuja, Asejire, Owerri, and Benin, focusing on water security, waterway and coastal protection, and community empowerment through sustainable action.

A major highlight of this year’s initiatives was the Elegushi Beach clean-up in Lagos, organized in collaboration with QFA, the franchisors of well-loved brands like Dodo Pizza and Krispy Kreme, as well as homegrown brands Scoop’d and Burger Nation.

Employees of NBC and QFA, alongside volunteers and environmental advocates, participated in removing plastic waste and pollutants, reinforcing both companies’ commitment to cleaner coastlines.

Omachona Eguda, Marketing Manager at Quality Foods Africa, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to sustainability:

At Quality Foods Africa, sustainability is at the heart of what we do. Partnering with NBC for this year’s World Water Day aligns with our commitment to responsible business practices.

Through initiatives like the Elegushi Beach Clean-Up, we are not just fostering cleaner coastlines but also reinforcing the importance of collective action in protecting our environment for future generations.

    Community Engagement & Awareness Campaigns

NBC extended its World Water Day activities beyond clean-up exercises to education and awareness initiatives:

    – March 21: An awareness session at Amakohia Primary School, Owerri, educated students and teachers on the importance of water conservation.
    – March 22: A sensitization drive at Kuchigoro Community, Abuja, featured a WASH (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene) awareness campaign to improve community water access and hygiene standards.
    – March 25: A water conservation awareness walk in Owerri amplified messages on sustainable water management.

Through these initiatives, NBC continues to lead by example in water conservation and environmental sustainability, reaffirming its role as a responsible corporate leader committed to a water-secure future.

  • MTN Nigeria vests 1.3 million shares to key staff

MTN Nigeria Communications Plc has vested 1.3 million ordinary shares to its key executives, according to regulatory filings by the mobile network operator.

The company vested the shares to 33 employees between 26 and 27 March as a share-based compensation strategy to reward staff.

Share vesting allows the founders or employees the right to earn shares in a company over a period of time after meeting certain conditions.

According to corporate disclosures filed by MTN Nigeria at the Nigerian Exchange, Ukpanah Uto (company secretary), Kadri Modupe (chief financial officer), Ibrahim Yahaya (chief technical officer) and Sanya Odunayo (executive director, MTN Foundation) were awarded 85,213, 187,496, 96,726 and 26,553 shares in that order.

Other beneficiaries of the share vesting include 11 managers, nine senior managers and nine general managers.

In 2022, MTN Nigeria introduced new share schemes called Performance Share Plan (PSP) and Employee Share Ownership Plan (ESOP) for its staff, both replacing an old scheme called Notional Plan Option.

The PSP, a conditional share offer, awards shares to management staff yearly and allows eligible participants to receive a specific number of shares.

Employees are not entitled to receive dividends on the shares during the vesting period,” MTN Nigeria stated in its financial statements for the nine-month period ended 30 September 2022.

The ESOP is a one-off share award by MTN Nigeria to qualifying non-management staff at no cost to the employees and is not tied to company performance.

  • Video: 17 ‘foreign gang terrorists’ deported by Trump admin to El Salvador

President Donald Trump’s administration announced on Monday that an additional 17 “foreign gang terrorists” who belonged to the Tren De Aragua and MS-13 gangs were deported on Sunday to the Terrorism Confinement Center in El Salvador.

In a Monday statement, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, “Last night, in a successful counter-terrorism operation with our allies in El Salvador, the United States military transferred a group of 17 violent criminals from the Tren de Aragua and MS-13 organizations, including murderers and rapists.”

In his statement, Rubio said the president designated both MS-13 and Tren de Aragua as “Foreign Terrorist Organizations” to help protect the American people. The secretary of state added, “These criminals will no longer terrorize our communities and citizens.”

Rubio thanked El Salvador President Nayib Bukele for the “unparalleled partnership” between his administration and the Trump administration to take steps to protect both the U.S. and El Salvador from “transnational crime and terrorism.”

READ MORE: Video: 250+ gang member ‘monsters’ deported by Trump admin to El Salvador

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Bukele shared a video of Sunday’s joint military operation. The video shows the 17 “foreign gang terrorists” being escorted by law enforcement officials off a U.S. Air Force airplane before being transported to the Terrorism Confinement Center in El Salvador. The video also shows the illegal immigrant gang members having their heads shaved and being placed in prison cells.

“Last night, in a joint military operation with our allies from the United States, we transferred 17 extremely dangerous criminals linked to Tren de Aragua and MS-13,” Bukele wrote. “All individuals are confirmed murderers and high-profile offenders, including six child rapists. This operation is another step in the fight against terrorism and organized crime.”

According to The Daily Wire, the Trump administration’s deportation of 17 additional “foreign gang terrorists” comes as the administration continues to spar with a federal judge over the president’s authority to deport individuals believed to be members of the terrorist gangs identified by the administration.

The Daily Wire noted that Judge James Boasberg issued a temporary order prohibiting the Trump administration from deporting illegal immigrants under the “Alien Enemies Act of 1798” earlier this month following the administration’s deportation of over 250 illegal immigrant gang members to El Salvador.

Fox News reported that the Trump administration asked the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday to review Boasberg’s restraining order against the administration’s use of the Alien Enemies Act to deport illegal immigrant gang members.

In Friday’s filing, U.S. Acting Solicitor General Sarah Harris claimed that the “flawed” order against the administration threatens “the government’s sensitive negotiations with foreign powers” and could cause “serious and perhaps irreparable harm if not immediately reviewed” by the Supreme Court.
