Apple ordered to pay TOT $110.7m over patent infringement

NEW YORK (CONVERSEER) – Apple has been ordered to pay $110.7 million for infringing the wireless patents of Spanish company TOT Power Control.

The jury found that the transceivers used in Apple devices relied on 3G wireless technology owned by TOT.

TOT was founded by engineer Alvaro Lopez-Medrano, who invented and patented a technology that manages how electricity is used in response to changes in the ratio of radio signals to interference.

TOT does not make any products and has filed lawsuits against LG, Samsung, Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile.

The plaintiff filed the lawsuit in 2021. TOT stated that it had contacted Apple and its wireless baseband processor suppliers, hoping to grant them a licence to use TOT technology, but Apple and other companies refused.

Apple argued that the TOT patents it was accused of infringing were invalid, but failed to prove that in court. TOT sought damages and ongoing royalties. Apple said it was disappointed with the ruling and would appeal.
