Bwala Challenges Peter Obi’s Democratic Qualifications

Presidential media aide, Daniel Bwala has launched a scathing critique of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, accusing him of lacking an understanding of democracy and dismissing him as a “failed politician.”

Bwala’s remarks came in response to Obi’s statement at a colloquium in Abuja on Monday, where the former governor lamented what he described as the collapse of democracy under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Obi had drawn a metaphor comparing Nigeria’s democratic journey to a building project that had been progressing until recent years when, according to him, everything was “knocked down” and left dysfunctional.

Reacting in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Bwala questioned Obi’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic struggles, suggesting that while Tinubu and other activists were fighting for democracy, Obi was focused on commercial ventures.

“It is funny how failed politicians are trying to redefine democracy. Peter Obi says democracy has collapsed. Does he even know the meaning of democracy? When people were fighting for democracy, Gregory was busy buying and selling,” Bwala wrote, referring to Obi by his middle name.

The presidential aide also accused Obi of fostering division and spreading inflammatory rhetoric.

“He doesn’t have a history of any democratic activism from his school days to date. His expertise lies in instigating hate speech and vitriol,” Bwala alleged.

Obi, a former vice-presidential candidate and key opposition figure, has remained a vocal critic of the current administration. His remarks at the colloquium underscored his concerns about governance and democratic stability in Nigeria. However, his comments have drawn sharp responses from Tinubu’s allies, who insist that democracy in the country remains intact and resilient.
