Ogoja, Cross River – A Catholic priest, Reverend Father Michael Abang Obi, narrowly escaped death on New Year’s Eve after his car exploded shortly after officiating a wedding.
The incident occurred at St Joseph de Worker Parish, Bansara, in the Catholic Diocese of Ogoja, Cross River State, where Rev. Obi serves as parish administrator and Vicar for Priests.
According to eyewitnesses, the priest’s car was completely engulfed in flames following the explosion.
Narrating the ordeal, Rev. Obi said he had stopped to guide some local women gathering firewood in the church compound. “As I got back into the car and was about to drive off, there was an explosion. I was lucky to have the door opened. I am saved. Thanks be to God,” he stated.
Having served in the diocese for over 25 years, Rev. Obi is regarded as the longest-serving vicar in the region, known for coordinating priests.
Confirming the incident, another senior priest, Sir Nandi Bette, expressed gratitude for Rev. Obi’s survival, adding that the parish community is offering thanks for his safety.
The cause of the explosion remains unknown.
