China Executes Ex-Official Li Jianping in $421M Corruption Scandal

Beijing, China – China executed Li Jianping, a former official from Inner Mongolia, on December 17, 2024, for involvement in a corruption case involving over $421 million.

Li was the former secretary of the Communist Party working committee of the Hohhot Economic and Technological Development Zone.

His death sentence was initially issued in September 2022 and upheld on appeal in August 2024, following approval by the Supreme People’s Court.

This execution is part of President Xi Jinping’s ongoing anti-corruption campaign, which has targeted both high-ranking “tigers” and low-ranking “flies” within the Communist Party.

The case is notable for being the largest corruption case in China’s history in terms of the sum involved.

Li was convicted of embezzling three billion yuan in illegal gains, which included bribery and misuse of public funds.

The execution serves as a stark reminder of China’s stance on corruption, particularly under Xi Jinping’s leadership, where the anti-corruption drive has been a central theme of his governance model.
