Cross River, others to witness rains, thunderstorms

CALABAR (CONVERSEER) – The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across several states, including Cross River, from Monday, 16th June to Wednesday, 18th June 2025.

According to the weather outlook released by NiMet in Abuja, Cross River and other parts of the southern region are expected to experience rains and thunderstorms both in the morning and later in the day throughout the three-day period.

For Monday, NiMet predicted morning rains in parts of Cross River, Ebonyi, Abia, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Ogun, Rivers, Lagos and Akwa Ibom States. The agency said that later in the day, thunderstorms accompanied by rain showers are expected over parts of Cross River and the rest of the southern region.

On Tuesday, the agency maintained similar forecasts, noting that Cross River would witness morning rains alongside Ogun, Ondo, Rivers and Lagos States. Isolated thunderstorms and rain showers are also expected later in the day.

By Wednesday, although morning rainfall in the region is expected in fewer areas—specifically Ogun and Lagos—NiMet projected that most parts of the South, including Cross River, will experience isolated thunderstorms and rains as the day progresses.

NiMet warned that strong winds could precede thunderstorms and advised the public to take necessary precautions, particularly in areas prone to severe weather conditions.

“Ensure that loose objects are fastened to avoid collision. Driving under heavy rain should be avoided. Disconnect electrical appliances from power sources, and stay away from tall trees to avoid falling branches,” the advisory stated.

The agency also urged airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports for proper planning and safe operations.

With the consistent forecasts of rain and thunderstorms, residents of Cross River and other affected states are advised to remain vigilant, avoid flood-prone areas, and adhere to safety guidelines issued by relevant authorities.
