OBUDU (CONVERSEER) – In a bid to promote educational advancement and empower the next generation, an illustrious son of Umung Royal Dynasty, Dr Godwin Agbor, has awarded cash scholarships to 70 students of Obudu/Bekwarra/Obanliku (OBO) Federal Constituency.

The official presentation was made during the 2025 Umung Cultural Festival, where Dr Agbor, who served as Chief Host, emphasised that education remains the bedrock of every society and a vital tool for community development and collective advancement.

Speaking at the event, he said the scholarship was driven by his commitment to community building and human capital development.

“This initiative is meant to complement Governor Bassey Edet Otu’s giant strides in education, infrastructural development and health-driven policies under the ‘People First’ mandate,” Dr Agbor stated.

He added that the Umung Cultural Festival is an annual platform to foster unity and honour the legacy of Uti Otiribi Ikpenung I (1st Uti-Ikpa), patriarch of Umung Kingdom.

Dr Agbor also used the occasion to call for greater support from government, organisations and groups to expand the festival into an international event, declaring it will henceforth hold every first Sunday of September.

Commendations and Reactions

The scholarship committee chairman, represented by the President of the National Association of Obudu Students (NAOS-WW), commended Dr Agbor for what he described as “humanistic ingenuity” and pledged continued support to the educational scheme.

Some beneficiaries expressed gratitude, promising to make judicious use of the funds to advance their studies.

Dr Agbor, a Medical Director of Omega Clinic and Maternity, and descendant of the Umung patriarch, is celebrated as both a medical professional and an academic achiever.

Cultural Significance

Highlights of the event included the official unveiling of the Utugwang cultural attire by the Clan Heads of Ukworogung and Nkirira.

Students also received symbolic cash presentations, while the festival featured cultural displays, traditional dances, and a novelty football match where winners were awarded trophies and cash prizes.
