DSS arrests two suspects in killing of 16 northerners in Edo State

The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested two principal suspects linked to the brutal killing of 16 Nigerians of northern origin in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State.

The arrests, which followed credible intelligence, were confirmed in a statement on Tuesday by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpehbolo. Security agencies continue to pursue other key individuals believed to have played a role in the attack.

“The suspects were apprehended by DSS operatives in Uromi,” Itua said. “Security forces are actively hunting for others involved in this tragic incident.”

The arrested suspects have since been transferred to Abuja for further interrogation and prosecution by relevant authorities.

As tension simmers in Uromi, questions remain over the promised compensation for the families of the victims. Governor Okpehbolo had pledged support during his visit to Kano, where he met with families of the slain individuals. However, Itua noted that discussions between the Edo and Kano State governments were still ongoing to determine the form of compensation.

“I cannot confirm whether the compensation will be financial,” he said, “but both state governments are working together to ensure the victims’ families receive adequate support.”

On Monday, women in the community staged a protest at the palace of the Ojuromi of Uromi, condemning what they described as indiscriminate arrests by security agencies.

Amidst the security concerns, the Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged that some opposition parties are attempting to create chaos in the state.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, Edo APC Chairman, Jarret Tenebe, accused rival political groups of plotting to instigate violence ahead of Wednesday’s ruling by the Edo Election Petition Tribunal.

“Their sinister objective is clear,” Tenebe claimed. “They want to force President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Edo because they have no confidence in securing victory at the tribunal.”

The tribunal is set to deliver its verdict on the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, challenging the outcome of the September 21, 2024, governorship election.
