Ghana’s capital city, Accra will play host at the grand launch of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
President John Dramani Mahama is expected to officially open the ceremony, which will serve as the first in a series of coordinated celebrations across ECOWAS member states.
The event which is anticipated to feature vibrant display of culture, history, and regional unity, will bring together ministers and high-ranking officials from across the 15 member countries, marking the start of year-long festivities to commemorate five decades of regional cooperation and progress.
Highlights of the day will include the unveiling of the official Golden Jubilee logo and theme, as well as a rich program of cultural performances that trace the journey of ECOWAS from its founding in Lagos, Nigeria, in 1975, through its reforms, to the regional successes it has helped foster.
In a statement released by the ECOWAS Commission via the APO Group, the Conference of Heads of State and Government has urged each member country to observe the occasion with high visibility and national pride.
In response, the ECOWAS Administrative and Financial Committee approved a regional program of events during a virtual meeting held in February 2025.
