Education Minister's Unannounced Visit to King's College Uncovers 8-Month Power Outage

In a surprise visit to King’s College, Lagos, on Thursday, the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, uncovered an eight-month-long power outage at the school’s main campus.

The minister arrived at the TBS campus at 7:30 a.m., inspecting classrooms and facilities while noting the untidy environment and lack of electricity.

During the visit, Vice Principal Shittu Y. S. informed Alausa about the prolonged blackout, stating, “The light has been away for the past eight months. The generator worked until it collapsed before the end of the term in December.”

Shittu explained that the school had made temporary arrangements to address the issue, including purchasing generators for classrooms and the dining hall, as well as installing an inverter in the hostel. However, he noted that the annex campus for Junior Secondary School students in Victoria Island had maintained a regular power supply.

The minister’s visit highlighted the stark contrast between the two campuses and raised concerns about the conditions at the main campus.

Further details on the minister’s findings and potential interventions are expected to be released in the coming days.
