Three videos allegedly showing the freight train involved in the deadly Tempe crash, just minutes before its head-on collision with an Intercity train travelling from Athens to Thessaloniki, claiming 57 lives, have been made available to the investigating judge in Larissa, nearly two years after the crash on the night of February 28, 2023.
Lawyer Vassilis Kapernaros announced that he has presented the visual material to the investigating judge as the legal representative for Interstar Security, which is responsible for the security and video surveillance of the railway network.
According to his statement, the course of the freight train was recorded by camera 3 at the southern front of the Platamonas tunnel at 23:03:05, by camera 5 at the northern front of the Tempe tunnel at 23:13:52, and by camera 4 at the exit of the Tempe tunnel.
Offering an explanation as to why these videos had remained undiscovered for so long, Kapernaros reportedly stated that the security company ordered, last November, a thorough search of all computers at the operations center that use remote log downloads with the aim to locate any material related to the Tempe incident that may have previously gone undetected.
Earlier this week, experts from Ghent University in Belgium investigating the 2023 Tempe railway disaster, determined that an undeclared cargo of flammable substances exacerbated the tragedy.
